Current pressures on primary care

Forest Health Group would like to take this opportunity to explain to you why there have been delays in offering appointments lately, what we have done about this, and why we expect things to improve rapidly.

During the pandemic the level of demand on practices has increased hugely and we are now facing almost twice the level of demand for care from patients that we were in 2019. At the same time, it has become increasingly difficult to recruit staff in primary care, so we are dealing with greater numbers with fewer staff. Added to this the demands for PPE and social distancing mean that each practitioner can see fewer people per hour, and you can imagine that this is a perfect storm. Normally using locum GPs is an answer to manpower problems. Sadly, there are few locums available now and those that we find generally only make phone calls and will not see large numbers of face-to-face appointments (which is what we want to provide).

We have added extra clinics now which we hope will clear our backlog by the end of November and we are very proud to announce that we have now been successful in recruiting a new group of excellent GPs starting in January. The new doctors will be giving us a 49% increase in weekly GP sessions which we hope will allow us to provide the care you need in the way you want from then on.

Thank you for your understanding
